Basic Health Concepts Grades 9-Diploma Students analyze complex health concepts related to family life, nutrition, personal health, safety & injury prevention; and tobacco, alcohol, & other drug use prevention.
Rationale: This lesson meets the Maine Learning Results by having students learn about the importance of mental and personal health and learning techniques to improve their own personal health. Assessment Formative (Assessment for Learning) First students will be asked to fill out a personal mental health evaluation which allows them to see how they handle certain situations. This worksheet will ask them questions on what makes them angry, sad, how they resolve conflicts etc. Students will be taking part in a discussion on different things which stress them out and the importance of mental health. This discussion during class will help to see what students already know about mental health and ways which they deal with problems or stress in their life. By using what students already know and have learned through this class discussion, students will be given the opportunity to do further research on the importance of mental health. Students will be creating an online blog and within this blog provide different links on how on how resolve problems, relieve stress and any other research or facts they found on mental health. Summative (Assessment of Learning) Students will first be assessed by their completion of the self-evaluation on mental health worksheet. Students will then be assessed on their participation in the class discussion. Students will be asked to share input on what they learned about themselves, talk about how they resolve problems, the importance of mental health and any other things which they feel are important to discuss. Students will then be asked to create a blog on mental health and each student will be assessed on this based on a rubric checklist which will be provided to them at the beginning of the class. Each student will be asked to create a blog and provide any research or information that they found and also include a personal reflection on what they learned about their own mental health. If students followed all the criteria on the rubric they will receive a total of 30 points for this assignment. Integration Type II Technology: Students will be shown a video on facts about mental health and the importance of it. The next technology that will be used is the online blogs. Each student will be doing research on mental health and will be asked to create an online blog including external links with different facts, tips and anything else involving mental health. Writing: Students will be asked to write a blog and this blog must be well written with no grammar or spelling mistakes. Speaking: Students will be asked to take part in a class discussion and each student will be asked to share some input. All input shared by students must be appropriate and relevant. Groupings During the class period students will be spending a lot of time as a whole throughout the class discussion. When the class discussion is over students will be working alone to create their online blog on mental health. Students will be asked to work alone on this project so that every student is given the opportunity to share the ways which they relax and what they learned about their own mental health. Students have been asked to work with one another in many other different projects and this will give students the chance to work alone and focus on their own experiences. Differentiated Instruction Strategies Intrapersonal: This will be met when students are asked to reflect on their own mental health and how they solve problems. Students will also be given the opportunity to work on this assignment alone. Naturalist: Students will be asked to think about any out doors activities that they take part in that help them to relax and obtain good mental health. Linguistic: Students will be writing blogs on mental health and will be expected to use good grammar and spelling. Spatial: Students will be watching a video on mental health at the beginning of the class and students will be working on the internet to create their online blog. Bodily-Kinesthetic: Students will be asked to get up and retrieve a laptop and students will also be given an opportunity to try out different stretches to see if that helps to make them feel more relaxed and could possibly help with stress. Modifications/Accommodations I will review the IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP for each student and make appropriate modifications and accommodations. If a student is unable to complete this assignment due to a special need or learning disability then I will supply them with an alternative assignment. If a student is absent during this class, I will expect them to see me so I can review our class discussion and have them complete the personal mental health worksheet. I will then provide the student with the rubric and explain to them their assignment on their online blog. Depending upon how long the student was absent I will allow them to have some extra time to complete their blog and do their research because they did not have the class time like the rest of the class. Extensions I will show an online video clip providing information on mental health and why it is important. (Type II). This clip will get students thinking about mental health and how it is related to our physical health. I will also give students an opportunity to work with a Type II technology, online blogging. This will give students the opportunity to present the research/facts which they found (Type I) and present it in a more fun and interesting way by creating a blog with several other external links in it. This lesson will also incorporate the use of technology by allowing students to create an online blog including external links of different sites, videos, etc. Students will be given time inside and outside of class to work on their blog. Students will be given the chance to work with their peers during the discussion and also the opportunity to work alone and share their personal stories. •Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner. Rationale: This lesson addresses the Maine Standards for Initial teacher Certification by allowing students to receive a participation grade during the class discussion as well as an assessment of their blog. Students will be given the opportunity to work with a type II technology by creating their online blog and including external links in it. Students will be given time during class as well as out of class to work on their blog. I will then tell the class a little bit about what we will be doing in class today. Next I will show the students my video clip on mental illness. I will briefly ask students about what they thought about this video and ask them how many of them know someone who suffers with a mental illness. The class desks will be arranges in a half circle so that all students will ne engaged in the class discussion. Students will be allowed to chose where they sit during this class and this will allow all students to be involved. I will then pass out a self mental health evaluation sheet to each student and ask then to fill it out. Once students finish completing their mental health evaluation worksheet we will have a discussion on what they learned about their own mental health and also talk about why mental health is so important. From this discussion students will know how to relieve stress and seek different types of help when anxiety seems too much for them to handle. Students will also know how their families and friends can help them and they will know new exercises that can help them to relieve stress. I will expect each student to participate in the class discussion and tell some personal stories. I will also pass out an informative sheet on how laughter can help ones personal health and also provide them with tips on how to relieve stress. I will then tell students about the online blog which they will be creating and provide them with the rubric on what their grade will be based on. Students will then be giving the remainder of the class period to grab a laptop and begin finding research on personal health and creating their blog. It is important for students to learn these helpful tips because if students are stressed out and don't know how to deal with their anxiety than they may become depressed or resort to negative ways in order to deal with their problems. This will also get students to reflect on the ways which they are relieving their stress and think about if they need to make any changes to how they solve their problems. By creating a blog students can share facts and research that they have learned and present them to their classmates in a fun and interesting way. Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise, Tailor: Intrapersonal, Spatial, Verbal, and Naturalistic. This assignment will allow students to self-assess their own mental health and think about how affective the ways they chose to solve problems are. They will also be learning new tips; facts and interesting information to help them in the future resolve any problems they may face.
